Sadly our little MP3 FM gadget thing has broken so no more iPod. At first this bothered me but soon I saw it as the blessing it was. With no more iPod we soon discovered the joy of NZ local radio. We started off enjoying the sing-a-long old skool playlists and adverts for items such as remote controlled irrigation systems and calf feeding equipment. Soon we graduated to the big leagues of local radio and found the best radio station in NZ: Radio Live.
The presenter is a chap called Michael who could be described as anything between an angry and curmudgeonly chap through to an outright racist biggot.
I will leave you with some of my favourite quotes from a recent show (please try and affect your best NZ accent while reading this):
- “The rise of the fatties is the biggest social event of modern civilization”
- “Maoris – why are they just too lazy to get out of bed and promote themselves?”
- “Pilot whales are too thick to be saved, leave them on the beach and let this species die out, why bother saving anything so stupid they can’t even learn that you can’t swim on a beach.”
You have to love this guy – he is a prophet and a leader for our generation.
Arguments about whales? Who’da thunk it?!

ps – the man you are referring to is Michael Laws, the mayor of Whanganui, who, let’s just say, isn’t universally loved here in NZ.
